Happy Planting Day with Artist Dario Mohr
The Happy Planting Day ceremony is a participatory workshop and performance where audiences of all backgrounds are invited to participate in an ancient indigenous ritual of Ancestor Veneration through a contemporary engagement that Mohr invented. Audiences will be provided seed paper greeting cards, which are sourced from the continent of Africa, and contain African Daisies. The purpose is for audience members to write a message to a deceased ancestor with the intention that they will receive it. Once written, they will submit their message into a basket among other entries collected at that workshop, which will be planted at a later date to bring new life into the world in their memory. The reason they contain African daisies is because they are native to East Africa, which anthropologists discovered to be the birthplace of humanity, which binds all people to a single region of the globe.
