A.I.R. is a cooperative, women’s gallery that has operated in NYC since 1974. The exhibition at Governors Island includes work by the New York gallery artists, by national affiliates and by gallery fellows as well.
The current exhibition, Taken on Trust presents together for the first time the work of the 2016-2017 A.I.R. Fellowship artists: Manal Abu-Shaheen, Elizabeth Hoy, Eleanor King, MaryKate Maher, Alison Owen, and Naomi Elena Ramirez.
Taken on Trust
Trust is on decline. A simple search in Google trends shows that the use of the word in the United States is at its lowest point in the last five years. Taken on Trust looks to renew the conversation about real, relationship-based trust and the labor required to achieve it. The works selected for the exhibition explore what are the practices that determine and develop relationships of trust between artists, subjects, helpers, partners, and audiences.
Fragmented Imaginaries presents works by the first round of artists participating in the 2017 A.I.R. Summer Residency at Governors Island. Sarah Anderson, Rachel Guardiola, Emily Oliveira, Macon Reed, and Victoria-idongesit Undonian share an interest in exploring the breaks within contemporary conditions and historical events. The included artworks manifest as artifacts of another present – amalgamations of both real and imagined pasts – to express the slippage between fact and fiction, and the past, present, and future.
