Governors Island Climate
In 2020, the Trust for Governors Island and the New York City Mayor’s Office announced a vision to create the Center for Climate Solutions, a community to accelerate climate solutions for cities on Governors Island. In April 2023, following a two-year competitive process led by the Trust and the City of New York, The New York Climate Exchange was selected as the anchor research and educational institution for this initiative, in addition to programs presented by the Trust and the Island’s tenants and partners working in climate.
This work supports the research, development and demonstration of equitable climate solutions for New York City — that can be scaled and applied globally — by:
- Expanding opportunities for the research and development of solutions for resilient and healthy urban neighborhoods to ready New York City, and cities around the world, for climate change.
- Attracting and growing high quality green jobs for New Yorkers with a diverse range of backgrounds through a range of educational and training opportunities.
- Creating space for New Yorkers to learn from, engage with, and play a central role in climate advocacy and action.

Harbor Climate Collaborative
The Trust for Governors Island is proud to be a key member of the Harbor Climate Collaborative, a joint initiative between three mission-aligned public entities with sites along New York Harbor — the Trust for Governors Island, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), and Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC). The Collaborative will be the center of a burgeoning climate innovation ecosystem in New York City.
With over $725 million in public investments for the green economy at NYCEDC’s Sunset Park District, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and on Governors Island, all three partnering institutions support climate innovators through piloting, tenanting, regulatory coordination, workforce development, knowledge/data sharing, fundraising, and facilitating access to City agencies.
