Longwood Gardens encompasses 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows. It is home to 11,000 types of plants, more fountains than any other garden in the US, educational and visitor programming, and features over 400 performances a year. It is located about 30 miles from Philadelphia and more than 800,000 visitors came to the gardens last year to visit. In the plan for Longwood Gardens, West 8 will focus on a number of key themes that they also explored in the plan for Governors Island, including making it a destination that can attract a great number of visitors, and how they can use sustainable features to ensure that it remains a place that future generations can enjoy. Longwood Gardens now joins the list of other projects West 8 is working on in North America which of course include Governors Island, but also Lincoln Park in Miami Beach and the Toronto Waterfront.
