Cel­e­brate Labor Day on Gov­er­nors Island with Dan Zanes, the Rite of Sum­mer Con­cert Series, NYC Uni­cy­cle Fes­ti­val, and Free Bike Monday!

Gov­er­nors Island will be open 10 am-7pm on Sat­ur­day, Sun­day, and Labor Day Mon­day! Join us this hol­i­day week­end for spe­cial musi­cal events for all ages in Colonels Row, includ­ing an acoustic jam ses­sion by fam­i­ly music favorite Dan Zanes and alt-clas­si­cal music con­cert Rite-a-Thon. Vis­i­tors can also enjoy the NYC Uni­cy­cle Fes­ti­val and Bike and Roll’s Free Bike Mon­day, when cruis­er bikes are free for up to one hour. Dan Zanes Porch Par­ty Sin­ga­long, Sat­ur­day, 1 pm to 4 pm, Colonels Row, Build­ing 410 Fam­i­ly music favorite Dan Zanes sings on a porch while friends drop in and out. It’s an impromp­tu acoustic jam ses­sion — a free­wheel­ing after­noon of music and good times you won’t want to miss. He’ll be set­ting up shop on the porch of Build­ing 410 in Colonel’s Row from 1:00 to 4:00pm. Come ear­ly and stay late! Rite-a-Thon, Sun­day, 12 pm to 5 pm, Colonels Row On Sun­day, vis­i­tors can enjoy even more music in Colonels Row with Rite-a-Thon, the last con­cert in the Rite of Sum­mer alt-clas­si­cal con­cert series. The con­cert fea­tures pianists Blair McMil­lan and Pam Gold­berg, com­pos­er and singer Theo Bleck­mann, Clas­si­cal Jam and Tigue Per­cus­sion. NYC Uni­cy­cle Fes­ti­val, Sat­ur­day and Sun­day, 12 pm to 5 pm, South Bat­tery Park­ing Lot The 2013 NYC Uni­cy­cle Fes­ti­val rolls onto Gov­er­nors Island on Labor Day week­end. Activ­i­ties include races, com­pe­ti­tions, exhi­bi­tions, a vari­ety of uni­cy­cle sports includ­ing uni­cy­cle bas­ket­ball and hock­ey, world-famous rid­ers will dis­play their skills, and mem­bers of the pub­lic have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to try one — wheel rid­ing. Free Bike Mon­day, Mon­day, 10 am to 6 pm, Colonels Row & Yan­kee Pier Landing Expe­ri­ence miles of car-free bik­ing with a set of rent­ed wheels fit just for you. Bike and Roll offers rental bikes all week­end for all sizes and abil­i­ties, includ­ing kids’ bikes, kids’ trail­ers and four-seater quad­cy­cles. On Labor Day Mon­day, how­ev­er, vis­i­tors can enjoy Bike and Roll’s Free Bike Mon­day by bor­row­ing a cruis­er bike for free for up to one hour! Free Kayak­ing, Sat­ur­day, 10 am to 3 pm, Pier 101 Brought to you by the Down­town Boathouse, enjoy some fun time out on the water with this sum­mery activ­i­ty fea­tur­ing beau­ti­ful views of New York Har­bor! Oth­er Events This Week­end Include: Ris­ing Waters: Pho­tographs of Hur­ri­cane Sandy pre­sent­ed by The Inter­na­tion­al Cen­ter of Pho­tog­ra­phy and the Muse­um of the City of New York, 12 pm to 6 pm, Build­ing 19 In col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Muse­um of the City of New York, ICP presents an exhi­bi­tion of pho­tographs of the dam­age and recov­ery from Hur­ri­cane Sandy. Drawn from an open call for sub­mis­sions from the pub­lic that has drawn over 5,000 sub­mis­sions, the exhi­bi­tion includes work from pro­fes­sion­al pho­tog­ra­phers as well as com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers and bystanders who pho­tographed the effects of the dev­as­tat­ing storm and the sub­se­quent recov­ery efforts. Fête Par­adiso, 10:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Nolan Park For the first time in the US, a spec­tac­u­lar col­lec­tion of vin­tage French car­ni­val rides is open to the pub­lic here on Gov­er­nors Island! The Parisian expe­ri­ence is free to vis­i­tors both young and old at this mag­nifique fair­ground fes­ti­val com­plete with French music and cui­sine! FIG­MENT Sum­mer-Long Instal­la­tions, 12 pm to 5:30 pm, Parade Ground All week­end enjoy the inter­ac­tive Sculp­ture Gar­den, artist-designed Minigolf Course, City of Dreams Pavil­ion, and the Tree­house in the the Parade Grounds. Bet­ter Than Jam Hand­made Gifts Shop, 11 am to 6 pm, Nolan Park, Build­ing 16 The Brook­lyn bou­tique of all local­ly hand­made prod­ucts brings the cre­ations of New York City’s most tal­ent­ed artists and crafters to the beau­ti­ful and his­toric hous­es of Nolan Park. This week­end, the craft­ing gets cre­ative at a free work­shop of col­lage card mak­ing with Astro­dub on Sat­ur­day from 1 pm to 4 pm! The Skate Truck NYC, Sun­day and Mon­day, 11 am to 6 pm, Buoy Park­ing Lot The Skate Truck NYC pro­vides roller-skat­ing equip­ment, hel­mets and safe­ty equip­ment to skaters of any age. Ter­reform ONE: Gov­er­nors Hook Urba­neer­ing Exhib­it, All Day, Build­ing 110 Check out LMC­C’s art cen­ter exhib­it por­tray­ing future inno­v­a­tive archi­tec­ture, urban design, and land­scapes. Children’s Muse­um of the Arts, 11 am to 3 pm, Nolan Park Come to Nolan Park for the Children’s Muse­um of the Arts’ Free Art Island Out­post. Pop-up Library & Out­door Read­ing Room, 12 pm to 6 pm, Green next to Build­ing 114 Set­tle in with a good book at the pop-up library and out­door read­ing room pre­sent­ed by the Brook­lyn Pub­lic Library, Queens Pub­lic Library and NY Pub­lic Library. WWII & NYC: Pho­tog­ra­phy and Pro­pogan­da, 10 am to 6:30 pm, Build­ing 18 Through hands-on activ­i­ties and mov­ing pho­tos, this exhi­bi­tion, pre­sent­ed by the New York His­tor­i­cal Soci­ety, paints a vivid pic­ture of life in war-mobi­lized New York, when vir­tu­al­ly every indus­try, insti­tu­tion and home was trans­formed into a ven­ture to sup­port Allied vic­to­ry. Low­er Man­hat­tan Cul­tur­al Coun­cil Presents Build­ing 110: LMCC’s Arts Cen­ter at Gov­er­nors Island, 11 am to 5 pm, Build­ing 110 LMCC and its artists-in-res­i­dence wel­come audi­ence to Build­ing 110′s Gallery and their stu­dios.
