History

Governors Island National Monument, managed by the National Park Service, consists of two 1812-era forts, Fort Jay and Castle Williams. The National Park Service offers interpretive programs throughout the season and tours of the Castle and Fort.

Fort Jay: An Island Star!


Courtyard open daily 10 AM until 4:00 PM. Weekends tours every hour from 11:30 AM till 3:30 PM. About 30 minutes, meet at the Fort Jay bridge. Fortify your mind! Tour one of the best examples of classic star-shaped fort design anywhere in the country, including the oldest structure on the island

Castle Williams


Tours every hour from 11:30 AM till 3:30 PM. About 30 minutes. Get some history in the round at the best-preserved circular fortification in the nation. On weekends the Castle is open until 5:30 PM with an additional tour at 4:30 PM.
