Get your hands dirty at the Compost Learning Center! This facility processes over 60,000lbs of food scraps into compost each month, much of which is used here on Governors Island. Visitors can learn about composting and might even meet some goats and chickens.
Urban composting has dual purposes: diverting organic waste from the landfill and amending existing soil. The Soil Start Farm demonstrates how gardeners can use readily-available materials to create compost to grow plants in urban soil conditions.
The Lavender Field Project on Governors Island is a healing space for the community, the bees, and the earth. Join Earth Matter NY Sundays at 2:30pm from May 13 – August 5 for special activities that promote creativity, reflection, and relaxation at the Lavender Field.
