Desperately Seeking Susan (Susan Seidelman, 1985, 104m)
Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) is a bored New Jersey housewife who becomes obsessed with a woman named Susan (Madonna), who she only knows through reading personal ads seeking her—until a bump on the head leads to a bout of amnesia and her taking on Susan’s identity. Roberta quickly finds herself caught up in a plot involving murder, stolen Egyptian earrings, and the mob, as well as a romance with a friend of the guy who places the classifieds (Aidan Quinn). A spin on Jacques Rivette’s Celine and Julie Go Boating, this screwball romp was mainstream America’s introduction to New York City’s ’80s underground Bohemian scene and to the Material Girl herself, and features appearances by Ann Magnuson, John Turturro, Richard Hell, John Lurie, and more.

Screening with My Last Film (Zia Anger, USA, 2015, 9m)
Zia Anger’s exhilarating whatsit and freewheeling black comedy takes aim at the independent film scenes in NY and L.A. with no-holds-barred ferocity, formal ingenuity, and an eyebrow-raising cast that includes Lola Kirke, Mac DeMarco, and Rosanna Arquette. Please be advised this film contains explicit language, violent imagery including suicide, and partial nudity that may not be appropriate for all audiences.

Starting at 6PM: Beer garden featuring Threes Brewing and Sixpoint Brewery. Food by Monk’s Meats, DUB Pies, Gorilla Cheese and Dolce Brooklyn. Music by Theodore Jahng.

Starting at 8PM, don’t miss a special drag performance by Monroe Sedgwick inspired by Desperately Seeking Susan. Come in costume to join in on the fun!

The feature film begins at dusk and is free and open to the public. The Parade Ground is a large grassy field, so bring a blanket or something to sit on!

Ferries during outdoor film nights will depart Lower Manhattan at 4:45, 5:30, 6:30, 7, 7:30, 8 and 8:30 PM. Ferries will return to Lower Manhattan from Soissons Landing at 8:30, 9, 9:30, 10, 10:30, 10:45 and 11:00PM.

Our second screening of Escape in New York: Outdoor Films on Governors Island is presented in partnership with the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The series is inspired by the city we all call home, and those iconic skyline views seen from the harbor.
