The Public Works Department Presents: Sanctuary City

Join us for a wide array of immersive programming including: public workshops with street artists, the showing of new work from nine exciting New York City ensemble driven companies, monthly concerts on the grass and innovative site based performance art and expanded cinema productions. Contribute towards the library of empty books, come play in interactive light installations, or come join on the grass with a cup of tea and drone, noise, jazz, experimental electronic, ambient, and techno offerings amongst many other genres for desert.
Armory: The Library of Empty Books
Kids, teenagers, and adults became authors, writing their stories into blank journals lining our bookshelves. The Library will be open to the public all summer. At the culmination of this five month residency, it will be home to the multitude of the diverse voices that make up New York City. Come take part and be an author!
Saturday & Sunday, 12-6 PM
We Don’t Live Here Anymore
UK based artists Melissa Chambers & Candace Thompson present We Don’t Live Here Anymore, a locative sound journey experienced individually exploring the layered experience of loss and of leaving home. As the audience delve back and forward through a palimpsest of people, stories and and historical events, they intrude, or are invited into the lives of people who lived here once, and are charged with the puzzle of what happened to them, and why.
Saturday, 2 PM
For almost HALF a year Public Works Department has been in residence on Governors Island! They’ve hosted TEN experimental performance companies, FOURTEEN installation media artists, FOUR music events, FOUR DJ’s, A CaCao making event, free yoga, spray art workshops, meditation and so much immersive programming! This summer has been packed! Come join the closing celebration on Sunday. An explosion of art, music, performance and a reading from our community written library — The Armory. Eleni Maltas will provide live music for the send off party and many returning artists and performers bringing their work back to the house.
