Development Opportunities on Governors Island

Request for Proposals to redevelop historic buildings for educational, cultural, and commercial uses

With many significant capital improvements underway, Governors Island presents an amazing opportunity for innovative enterprises to build on the Island's spirit and attributes, and establish a presence on the Island. The Trust for Governors Island is pleased to release this Request for Proposals for the redevelopment and adaptive re-use of over 40 existing historic buildings on Governors Island totaling 1 million square feet for educational, cultural, and commercial uses.

Request for Expressions of Interest to develop 33 acres of the South Island

The Trust for Governors Island has also released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the development of 33 acres of prime real estate on Governors Island. A broad range of developers, nonprofits, institutions, and other interested groups are invited to offer visionary ideas for this truly unique property. The Trust welcomes commercial, educational, and cultural uses that take advantage of the unmatched potential of this Island and make a meaningful contribution to its future.

The RFP and RFEI are two independent processes. The response due date for both is Thursday, March 14, 2013.

Governors Island is closed for the season and will re-open in May 2013.

The Trust for Governors Island is undertaking an ambitious capital program to bring the Island’s infrastructure into the 21st century and build an extraordinary new park and public spaces. Mayor Bloomberg and elected officials broke ground on the first phase of the Park and Public Space Plan, which was designed by the acclaimed landscape architecture firm, West 8. The first phase adds key visitor amenities throughout the Historic District, including lighting and signage and 30 new acres of park on the island’s southern end. The 30 new acres consist of Liggett Terrace, Hammock Grove and the Play Lawn, which open in 2013. View the entire Park and Public Space Plan here.
